Sr High Fall Retreat
2003 A group of 17 youth and 5 adults left CCC for Fal Retreat in Michigan. We arrived late Friday to unusualy cold weather. After unpacking the vans, we had a brief time of worship followed by a message from Tom. After Tom's message we headed off to the cabins and "shortly" after went to sleep.
The next morning started around 8:00 AM with a wonderful surprise of some light snow showers.. at 8:30 we met in the dinning hall along with all the other groups that were using the facility for breakfast. Following breakfast was a devotional time in which the students were given a guide sheet and sent to find a quiet spot to read and be with the Lord.
When finished with devotions, the students (and adults) were lead by camp staff in a series of activities to build trust, communications and friendship with each other. In the first activity, the students & staff formed a circle. One student or staff was in the center with a soft "stick". A person had to call out a name. The person with the "stick" was tring to "hit" the person called out before that person called out a different person. This game was to get the students and staff to easily know each other's names. The second game brought more of a leadership challenge. A camp staff person would place an object in the middle of the circle. The students had to decide how they would going to pick up and pass that item around the circle. Once a method (arms, feet, knees, etc.) was used, that method could not be used on another object later on. This game made the students work together to come up with a plan to achive the task. The final activity incorperated the leadership skills with physical trusting of one another. In this third activity, the students were faced with a "raging forest fire" and the only escape was going up a 10 foot cliff. The other side of the cliff only had room for three people, so as some got up it, others would have to leave due to space constrants. This activity taught the students team work in getting everyone over the cliff safely.
Following these activities we returned to the meeting room for a time of worship followed by a message from Tom.
